Apache Tears

Apache Tears

Back in stock after a long hiatus, Apache Tears (Obsidian Nodules) from Mexico in sizes from 3/4″ to 1 3/4″.  This material benefits from an additional 48-hour step of 1000 grit Aluminum Oxide before going into its 8000 Aluminum Oxide final polishing stage.  We use ceramic media as a filler as too many plastic pellets or foam will slow down the polishing process.  It’s important to keep the barrel to its 3/4’s full level.

MOHS hardness scale of  5-6

  • Please note this material was photographed wet and our second photo is a customers finished Apache Tears.

Obsidian is a type of naturally occurring glass formed as an extrusive igneous rock.  It is produced when felsic lava erupted from a volcano, cools rapidly through the glass transition temperature and freezes without sufficient time for crystal growth.  Because of the lack of crystal structure, Obsidian edges can reach almost molecular thinness, leading to its ancient use of projectile points (arrow heads), and its modern use as surgical scalpel blades.
