Description

Sauropods were the gentle giants of the dinosaur world, with long necks, long tails, and massive bodies that could weigh up to 100 tons. They were herbivores that fed on plants high up in the trees, using their necks as cranes and their peg-like teeth as scissors. They lived from the Jurassic to the Cretaceous periods, about 200 to 65 million years ago, and were widespread across all continents except Antarctica. They had four sturdy legs that supported their weight, and walked on their toes, leaving distinctive footprints in the ground. They had small heads relative to their body size, and small brains that were only about the size of a fist or a banana. They communicated with each other using low-frequency sounds, and some may have used their tails as whips to fend off predators.
