Description

Skutterudite, one of a series of cobalt and nickel arsenide minerals that occur with other cobalt and nickel minerals in moderate-temperature veins. The members of the series, which all form crystals of isometric symmetry, are skutterudite and smaltite; their compositions approach that of (Co,Fe,Ni)As2−3. Named in 1845 by Wilhelm Karl von Haidinger after its discovery locality, Skutterud, Modum, Norway.
