Iolite is a dark blue mineral occurring chiefly in metamorphic rocks. It consists of an aluminosilicate of magnesium and also occurs as a dichroic gem variety. It is believed that ancient Viking navigators used thin slices of Iolite as filters to help determine the direction of the sun on overcast days.
