This is Pipestone, otherwise know as Catlinite, from Pipestone, Minnesota. As the world’s second softest rock, it is makes a great rock for a carving project. Pipestone varies in shades of a brownish red color. Known to be prized by Native Americans for making sacred or ceremonial pipes. Only enrolled Native Americans are allowed to quarry for Pipestone at the Pipestone National Monument to protect from over-mining.Although there is a fracture there is plenty of rock to cut from.
