Description
Weevil Cocoon fossils are commonly on the western coast of Eyre Peninsula in South Australia and can be found inland up to 60 kilometers. Called “clogs” locally in Australia, specimens have found under analysis to be the pupas of the weevil, Leptopius duponti. Over a long period of time the coating around the pupal cases is hardened and mineralized. The rock-hard pupal cases are later found exposed by natural erosion or excavation and are believed to be up to 100,000 years old.
