This is a splendid Spanish Pyrite specimen from the Navajun Mine, Piritas De Navajus S.L., Spain.  This very interesting specimen has 3 large excellent quality Pyrite cubes in matrix and evidence where 2 more were once attached.  The largest shiny Pyrite cube measures 1 1/16″ x 1 3/16″ x 1 1/16″.   The smallest cube is over 3/4″ x nearly 15/16″ x 13/16″ and the other cube being 1″ x 15/16″ x 15/16″.  They rest in matrix measuring 4 3/4″ x almost 4″ x nearly 3″ overall and weighs just over 2 pounds.  Very, very cool!!

Pyrite, or Iron Pyrite, is an Iron sulfide with isometric Crystals that usually appear as cubes.  It is brittle and can break or powder easily.  Its metallic luster and brass yellow hue have earned it the nickname of “fool’s gold” due to many miners mistaken it for the real thing.  Ironically, small quantities of actual gold are sometimes found in Pyrite.  It is the most common of the sulfide minerals and is usually found with other sulfides or oxides in Quartz veins, sedimentary or metamorphic rocks.
