Description
Gibbsite is one of the mineral forms of aluminum hydroxide and also sometimes called hydrargillite. Gibbsite is an important ore of Aluminum in that it is one of three main phases that make up the rock Bauxite. Gibbsite is a secondary mineral mainly of tropical and subtropical occurrence. Named by John Torrey in 1822 in honor of Colonel George Gibbs, a wealthy import merchant who was a geologist and mineralogist. Notable occurrences include Brazil, Central Africa, Germany, Hungary, France, Guyana and USA (mainly Alaska).
