M800 Yooperlite

M800 Yooperlite

Here’s a new item, a very cool Yooperlite.  It’s a pretty plain looking rock in color until under a LW/UV light shows a pretty bright yellow color almost looking like a volcano bursting lava from within. It also has lots of sparkle. This nice specimen measures 1 1/8″ x 7/8″ x 1/2″.

Yooperlites were recently discovered on the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula by Eric Rintamaki. They are syenite rocks that contain sodalite, a fluorescent mineral that has never before been identified in Michigan. The sodalite is what gives the Yooperlites their glow under a UV lamp.  Yooperlite is derived from the nick name Yoopers which is what the folks in that area call themselves.
