This is a very nice, above average quality Onyx Mortar and Pestle. The mortar measures 4 7/8″ in diameter x 5 1/4″ tall with the pestle being 1 5/8″ in diameter x 5 1/2″ long and weighs nearly 5 pounds. It has a unique design which exhibits several colors of green, brown and beige with designs in different areas and is highly polished all around except for the bottom. It makes for a very interesting functional display piece or would make a nice gift.

Onyx is a banded variety of Calcite. The colors of its bands range from white to almost every color except shades of purple, blue and black. It is used for vases, bowls, beads, cabochons and other items. This type is found in Mexico and Pakistan and is often carved and polished into various items. This material is much more readily available and softer than the gemstone commonly called Black Onyx which is a silica gem.
