BCR409 Black Skin Agate

BCR409 Black Skin Agate

  • Here’s a new item, really neat Black Skin Agate from India. It appears to be solid for cutting and cabbing.
  • A great rock for cutting and any lapidary project.
  • These are great pieces that Shawn has picked out. He says he sees something special in these. Whether it be that it needs thumbed, ground on and tumbled, cut and tumbled or cut and polished , he sees something. Whether you will see what he sees, or whether you can bring to fruition what he sees would be up to you. Of course, with all rocks, there are still risks. There could be fracture lines in the wrong place, the color may change or…Shawn could just be wrong. Regardless, these are much higher quality than our regular tumble material.
  • It may not look like much but take note of the last photo that is polished piece to see what possibilities may lie within. We do believe this rock has great potential.
  • This particular select set  measures 6″ x 3 3/4″ x 4 1/4″ and weighs nearly 5 1/2 pounds.

MOHS hardness scale of  6.5 – 7

Agate from India comes in a variety of types in Blackskin, Whiteskin or Yellowskin. The most popular are those containing moss. Most of the moss agate, (called suabhaji), comes from the Bud-Kotra area in Morvi in the area around Khambat (“Camaby”) in Gujarat Province, India. They are usually found buried about 2 feet under the surface and must be dug up. When cut and finished they take an excellent polish. The agate is normally clear or clouded with inclusions of dark-green or red-brown moss.
