SL201 Stromatolite

SL201 Stromatolite

This is an awesome, what we believe to be, a Stromatolite slab! It measures 6 1/2″ x 4 1/4″ x 1/4″ and weighs nearly 3/4 lb. This particular slab is durable enough to cut and polish for cabochons and other projects. Take note of the last photo showing slab wet to give an idea of how it could look polished.

Stromatolites are one of the oldest bacterial microfossils known. The Peruvian Stromatolites are from the lower Proterozic period some 2.3 billion years. They are from the Eastern Andes, Bolivia, South America. Stromatolites are actually mounds of mud that have been preserved. Very few will actually contain the fossilized microbes that built them. They accumulate because blue- green algae produces a sticky film that catches mud and silt, in turn forming layers. In time theses layer build up to form mounds.
